My indoor cat weighs 20lbs. How can I help him lose weight?
Answer:
Exercising your cat is a great idea. Many indoor cats become
overweight because they overeat and lead a sedentary lifestyle. Just
10 minutes a day of exercise can burn enough calories to keep your
cats slim and trim. This does require effort on your part, but at
only 10 minutes per day, it should still be a breeze. Here are some
ideas I tell my clients:
Laser pointers - cats love chasing them, and you can sit in one place
while your cat runs ragged!
Cat dancers are great toys that cats love to chase - again, low effort
on your part and great exercise for the cat.
Buster cubes - ask at your pet store - these are actually designed for
dogs, but you can buy one meant for a small dog. Basically, it's a
cube that you can hide cat kibble in and your cat will love to play
with it to try to get the food out. You can pack one full of food and
leave it out all day while you work.
Hiding food around the house - you can hide little cat treats or cat
kibble in various locations, making your cat work for her food.
