Recently neutered cat
Submitted by monique on Jan 15, 2007
My cat was neutered a week ago - since then he has been urinating in the house and mounting his sister! Did the vet miss
something during surgery?
Answer:
It takes 4-6 weeks for the testosterone levels to completely dissipate after neuter surgery. Many times, I've noticed, cats seem to go into "testosterone withdrawal". The cats cat spray and otherwise act a little eccentric.
Here is what you can do in the meantime while the testosterone leaves the kitty:
Make sure you clean up all the places he has urinated with an enzymatic cleaner such as Anti-Icky Poo or Nature's Miracle. The enzymes will break down the urine protein and your cat won't be able to smell the urine. As long as he can detect the scent, he will think this is an appopriate place to urinate and keep going back.
Purchase a product called "Feliway" - you can get this online or at most petstores. It has a calming effect on cats and stops spraying in about 50% of cats. This might help out during this transitional time.
Finally, I want you to look at your cat's surgical site - if you note any swelling or discharge of any kind, he needs to be seen by the vet. Occasionally neuters can get infected or irritated, and if this is the case, the discomfort may be causing his odd behavior.
If the problem continues, you should have him evaluated for a urinary tract infection. Although very unlikely, he could have been contaminated during surgery and this could be causing him to urinate in inappropriate places.
