Hand Signals
Submitted by stella on Jan 01, 2008
I was wondering if there were any good books or websites with pictures of hang signals for dog training?

Answer:

There are typical hand signals that most people use, however, these hand signals are not required. Although, it is true that the standard hand signals work incredibly well with luring … the process of using food as a motivator to help your dog understand what you want.

The best thing to do when you aren’t sure of specifics with training is to work with a Certified Pet Dog Trainer (CPDT). As the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers states a CPDT can help insure a positive experience for both you and your dog. You can be confident that you are working with a professional who has the knowledge and expertise to make your investment in dog training safe, effective, and even fun!

Although it’s certainly possible to learn hand signals from a book or website, when those hand signals don’t “just work”, it’s imperative to have a good trainer who can help you determine why your dog isn’t responding. Without that, it’s very easy to get frustrated with training your dog. And that just creates stress for both you and your dog. Dogs don’t “disobey” the hand signals because they are trying to be difficult. They don’t follow the hand signals if they don’t understand what it is you want. A good trainer can quickly determine why the dog doesn’t understand and find a different, but still positive way, to help “explain” it to the dog.

Training should be a great experience for both you and your dog … something that causes your dog to love to learn and causes you to love to train!
