First Vet Visit
Submitted by lulangel on Aug 06, 2007
When should kittens first be taken to a vet to be examined or get shots. a cat i rescued had kittens and they are about three weeks old. I just want to make sure that they will grow up to be healthy.

Answer:

Great question! As long as the kittens are doing well - nursing well from mom, no coughing, sneezing, vomiting, or diarrhea - the first vet visit should occur between 6-8 weeks of age. At this visit, they can be de-wormed and receive their first set of shots, as well as a thorough check-up to make sure there are no congenital conditions. If, however, any of the kittens develop diarrhea, red and runny eyes, sneezing, act lethargic, or nurse poorly, they should be seen by a vet right away - young kittens this age can go downhill quickly once they become ill. Also, be sure to start reserving homes for them right away - since people will be anxious to adopt a cute kitten from you. But make sure you tell potential adopters that the kittens should stay with mom until they are at least 6 weeks old. Also, if you offer to pay for the the first vet visit and shots, it will be easier to find them homes. If you plan on keeping them yourself, I highly recommend keeping them indoors only - this is the number one way you can make sure they live a long, happy, and healthy life!
