Tresa was so content in her little hamster hotel, until one day my daughter left her cage open and she got a taste of the outside world without being held or travelling in her ball. After that she figured ways to get out. She was like Houdini. The whole cage would be shut and locked but we'd find her in the closet or in a bookshelf. One night I saw our cat Riley, skulking in the hallway at 3 in the morning. He had Tresa in his mouth. I saved Tresa that night and we put extra securities on her cage. She still found ways to get out. Last month, she wasn't so lucky. Riley found her again and I'll spare you the details. My daughter thinks Tresa died of old age. It's better that way.
