Bailey's a high-energy yellow lab approaching her first birthday. Last spring, she graduated puppy obedience class. It was a case of social promotion. As Pomp & Circumstance played, Bailey left the procession and jumped on her teacher. Tail wagging all the way.
Earlier in the semester, our assignment was to write down the official house rules by which she was to abide. We hung this document on the fridge. That's where Bailey found it, ate half, and left the other half on our steps. A defiant gesture.
We've been to our local dog park, where a dinosaur-sized dog tried to maul her. I had to jump in and throw some wild punches, like Joe Clark in 'Lean On Me.' We haven't been back.
But through it all, she's been a wonderful addition to the family. A constant companion who, despite the occasional urine on the carpet, enhances each day. And judging by the way she struts around for strangers, she'll love showing herself off on Pikapet.
