Nelson is another example of the horror of dog fighting in Kansas City. We can only imagine what this poor little guy has been through in his short life... Yet, he is one of the sweetest dogs in our program. He craves attention and is extremely affectionate
Story: Nelson was brought into a spay and neuter clinic in Kansas City by good Samaritans who found him abandoned in a bad part of town. MPR had volunteers on location and no words could express the shock and dismay they felt when they saw this pathetic little dog, covered in wounds and scars. Indeed, Nelson had cuts and injuries from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Even in that condition he was very well-mannered and loving.
MPR immediately secured a foster home for this precious soul so Nelson had the chance to recuperate from his ordeal in the safety of a loving home. Quite a difference for this courageous little warrior who survived the cruelty of dog fighting world.
Nelson is now back on his feet and as you can see from the "before" and "after" pictures, his sad past is completely behind him. He definitely looks like a different and has turned into quite the hunk.
Foster Situation: Nelson currently lives with a 2 yr old female basenji mix named Bella, and three roommates. Nelson and Bella's crates are in the living room next to each other. They have not been introduced outside of their crates yet, but really seem to like each other's company.
Nelson and Bella used to be crated in separate rooms while he was healing up, and after I moved Nelson's crate to the living room, Bella didn't want to sleep in her bedroom anymore, she wanted to be out in the living room with Nelson and wouldn't leave his side!
Nelson has settled into our home quite well. He has not had any accidents in his crate or in the house. He is quiet in his crate and does not tear up his blankets. He has been coming out of his shell and continues to be extremely sweet and overall well behaved.
Nelson loves to run and play in the fenced yard. He loves to go for walks/jogs in the neighborhood too. He walks well on a leash, and responds well to correction if he does pull.
Nelson loves attention! He's ready for you to play with him the minute you get home. I think he'd do well as an only dog in a home with an active owner who likes to play outside and go for runs, and possibly in a home with a female partner of a similar energy level to play with.
Training: Nelson is very housebroken, he's never had an accident. He's also crate-trained. He gets fed, gets to play with toys, and sleeps in his crate. Nelson knows sit and lay down, and does those well for treats, food, toys, to go outside, etc. He's getting good at sitting while we're out on walks too, even though he's distracted. Nelson is a bit mouthy, mostly right after he's let out of his crate when I get home, which I'm working on training out of him. I just don't think he can handle his happiness when someone comes home.
Personality: Nelson is very outgoing. This happy dude wants to meet everyone and everything. He has met grown ups, little kids, a couple of babies, and has been really good with all of them. He is very silly and adventurous. When he figures out he can do something, he will. Like crawling around and exploring underneath the deck.
Nelson is well behaved as a whole - He is high energy, but not hyper necessarily. He does love to run and play, but generally only in short bursts. Rabbits get his attention while on his leash more so than when he's in the yard.
Nelson does seem to be frightened by aggressive acting dogs, and is not a big fan of thunderstorms. Or just getting wet.
Overall, Nelson just wants to get to play a good long game of fetch or go for a jog, and then get to chill out with a bone or his kong and that makes him one happy dog.
Best Attribute: For me Nelson's best attribute has to be his resiliency. Knowing where he came from, the mistreatment he suffered at the hands of humans and seeing him bounce back, is just amazing. He has the ability to put a smile on your face every day with his unconditional love and affection. He also has a very striking appearance, very handsome.
He also plays a hybrid game of fetch that's really fun. He likes playing it with sticks more than balls. The trick is to take two sticks. He'll sit for you to throw one and fetch it. I tried and tried to get him to learn drop, but he just wants to tug or gnaw on it. But, if you have a second stick in your hand, he's more interested in the one in your hand than the one in his mouth. So he'll drop his stick and sit for yours, and the game repeats. So much fun!
