Derek came to me Paralyzed. Kicked or beaten by his previous owner. He was surrender to the clinic where my sister worked as a Vet Tech. He was Paralyzed from the neck down. But after a week at the Vet he was able to move his front legs. he started dragging himself around. It seems that he was going to be like that for the rest of his life. We adopted Derek 2 hours before they were going to euthanized.

When he came home he went straight for the toys. He kiss my Mom and dragged himself to the kitchen were Mom was cooking. She started feeding him and he fell in love with her.

After a week of love and attention, Derek started picking up his back legs. He started walking after that. We were so happy. I had a wheelchair order for him and cancel it.

He had to wear pull ups for a year. Due to the injuries he had lost control of his bowel movement. So he wore diaper and my Mom cut a hole in the back for his tail.

A year later he was potty train and off diapers. He wobbles when he walks and has a lot of health probelms. Thyroid, ear infection, eye infection, mouth infection and skin probelms. But Mommy takes him to the Vet right away. Due to the fact that he is allergic to his plaque and tarter he has lost 25 teeth. Just this past week he had 8 teeth remove due to the infection. The Vet has tried everything in his power to cure him and hopefully this time we think we found it.

I love him not only because i always wanted a black cocker. But because Derek has shown me that you dont have to be perfect to be loved. To me he is the most beautiful black cocker in the world and it makes me mad when people say he walks funny. If only they knew what he has been through. He fears man and strangers. So my son had a hard time trying to be accepted. But now everytime he call him "brother", Derek knows is him and runs to him. I have been with Derek to the Vet more than i ever did with my son when he was a baby. But i dont mind. I am happy to be able to care for him and make his life better than it was before. I dont know what happend to Derek and i guess i will never know. But the future with me and my family has been one full of love and attention. I thank God everyday for giving me Derek and letting him be part of my life. He follows me around like a shadow. He wakes up with me in the morning and when i go to bed, he goes to bed. He might be missing 25 teeth but he eats like a piggy, LOL. But more than anything he loves me and i love him.
