Bandit
mom needs some advice

On two things:
(1) Lately Ive been obsessed with licking my paws .. I just sit there and lick and lick ... mom has checked all of them out .. theres nothing wrong ... it's just weird .. they yell at me to stop and I dont pay attention .. so mom will hold me or wrap a blanket around so I can't lick

(2) as some of you most likely know, we got a new puppy over a month ago .. I snapped at him at first (which mom thought was normal) then I became more tolerant and stopped doing that .. well over the past few days I started snapping at him again ... if he steps on me (which mom can understand that) but sometimes if he's just near me ...

So any advice on either of these??

Zoe will occasionally do the same thing with the snapping at smaller dogs. She is punished when she is caught in the act... severely. Mom says she will not tolerate it in her home. She needs to see a behaviorist. It is very clear that her issue is jealousy. The little dogs get to sit in moms lap and get picked up but Zoe can't do that.

Bandit just needs some "Bandit" time. He used to do as he pleased, get attention as he pleased and is less than thrilled that everything has now changed. One on one time will help him adjust and I'm sure they will bond as they grow up together. Just like humans, I'm sure they will benefit from a mixture of one on one activities and activities that they learn to do together.

Outside is Zoe's special place since she is trained to stay in the yard so mom can run around with her; throw sticks and tennis balls and such while the others stay inside. Hopefully everything works out, keep us posted :)

I used to get some "Bandit" time when we went to the dog park but now the puppy is old enough to go too .. but dad is going out of town next weekend for a whole week, so mom is going to have grandma take the puppy for the weekend so just me and her can spend some time together .. I hope that helps

I don't know about licking the paws, sorry.  But Bandit is snapping at the new puppy because he is trying to be the "pack leader" in the house, which is the part you should play! They will learn to get along soon, they have to live together, so they have to het used to eachother.

Maybe a cone would work! That is why I had to wear my cone. You can find them at Petsmart for a good price.

I don't think a cone won't stop Bandit from getting to his paws - unless the cone is too big and then he could get hurt. The Vet told mom to never leave any of us alone for any period of time unsupervised with a cone on their head. It can get caught on things. Similar to the collar on the neck in the kennel.

Bandit have your mom have the Vet check your paws when you go to the Vet again. Not an emergency though. Whenever I play hard at the park - I do not play for several days. I hardly walk and act lethargic and lick my paws constantly. Mom looked and looked and found nothing either, but got really worried and took me to the Vet. When the Vet  examined my paws she said that my pads are soft and not conditioned and that is why tbey bother me. Mom couldn't see anything. The Vet said there is little that can be done about it. Mom now soaks my feet in a warm tub after play for about 10 minutes and that has helped a lot.

Also not to be mean - but it is possilbe that you may have "micro" size buggy of some sort that can only be seen under a microscope and not with the human eye. If you go to the doggie park it is possible to get anything.

As for your snapping at the new pup. Have your mom Consider what is happening and going on around when you snap. Is he around your water or food bowl? your bed?  ??? Brother always snaps at me on my nose if I go anywhere near his food bowl or when there is food around him. He is overly protective of food even if it is not his. He does not snap when he comes by my food bowl and seems to know it is mine - but thinks any other food belongs to him and every other pet needs to not go near it.

For the paw licking it may be allergies too.  You'd have to ask the vet and see what they say.  The snapping is probably a dominance thing. Like Sadie said, he wants to be the pack leader.  I do that too. I don't like any other dog around my food, if they come around I will growl and bite at the other dog.  Does anyone know how to stop this behavior?

Personally barking I think it is a good behavior. After all that is my food and no one needs to be near it unless they are going to give me more food  and if so I will consider keeping my nipping to myself unil they are done.

I just put up a link about lick granulomas.  In Bandit's case, Bandit is probably feeling a lack of attention because of the new puppy and is soothing himself with the licking.  More one on one time away from the puppy will probably help.  If Bandit keeps licking, he may need ultimately need medication to help him.

Nala may need more attention, could have an allergy or bite that triggers the licking, but then the licking irritates it and the cycle continues.  It could be that your dog has separation anxiety or is just an obsessive personality type.  No matter what the reason, you really should try to stop the licking and biting.  It could turn into a much bigger, more costly problem.

Well I went to the vet yesterday (mom's not too happy about how much they charge .. ) But Im on 2 diff pills for allergies .. and a special 20 dollar shampoo so we will see if it helps ... i have to let the shampoo sit on for 10 minutes .. mom gave me my first bath last night .. on the plus side she said it made my fur really soft and I smell good now =) I have to go back in 2 weeks to see if that helps ... here's hoping!

Licking of a particular area, by dogs is the most common symptom of an allergy. In specific paw licking is the product of an allergen in the grass. Daisy exhibited an identical behavior to Bandit’s until; she was taken to the vet and properly diagnosed. A trip to the vet may not be necessary; a dose or two of children’s Benedryl every day, depending on the severity, often cures dog allergies. I would contact your vet, to know the precise amount to give. Daisy's allergies come and go with the seasons, they tend to worsen in summer, and so I also spray a topical soothing ointment on her feet. I hope this helped!

As for the behaviorally issue, it seems your dogs are trying to establish a "pack order", you can assist this process up by feeding and greeting Bandit first, as with a puppy Bandit is more then likely the alpha.

You should check to see if you food has a "great new recipe". like Purina did a few times.  The first time I was allergic, and the second time Rozy was allergic.  Mom got me my own brand of food, and when It happend to Roze, she changed hers and Skyes.  2 different food was enough for Mom. She called Purina to see what the difference was, and when it was narrowed down, they sent her coupons for free bags of food!
