A Warning About Collars and Wire Kennels.

Hi Pet Friends, it's me, Sophie! I just wanted to tell you a little story about something that happened to me several months ago. I sleep in a wire kennel at night or whenever I want a nap. Momma sometimes locks us dogs inside our kennels while we eat, so Sam doesn't hog all our food down when Momma isn't looking. Well, one evening while we were having our dinner in our kennels, Momma had forgotten to remove my collar. We never wear our collars when we are inside our kennels. I did something....maybe I rubbed my neck against the bottom of the kennel, we are not sure....but my collar got caught on the wire by the gate. I pulled and pulled, but it got worse and I was choking. Momma heard the racket and came in to see what we dogs were into and then she saw me. I was gasping for air, but Momma tried to get me loose. I didn't realize that she was trying to help, because I was really scared and kept pulling and choking more, but somehow, she got the collar off me and saved my life.

So, the moral of this story, my friends, is to tell all your humans to ALWAYS remove your collar before putting you inside a wire/metal kennel. Accidents do happen and I really want all my pet friends to be safe, cause I love all of you very much!

I am so glad your mom was home to save you. It sounds like something we never think of and very good information.

Mom has tried to put me in Maile's wired kennel (only once as a time out) but all I do was whine so that is a very short lived mission. I do look kind of small and pathetic in it too so mom is bound to feel sorry for me.

The whining works really good, Pepeiao. I do that, too, so I can get what I want Sometimes Mom says NO kind of loud so I know I better stop whining...until later when I want something else. BOL

I gotta share this with mom cause it is good to know and so she doesn't put me in that kennel anymore. Good way to stay out I say. After all she needs to leave my collar on in case I take an unescorted trip to the park again. I have actually graduated from my wired kennel to the whole bedroom. If I ever get put in time out mom is going to know she needs to take off my collar cause I don't want to choke. I am so glad you didn't choke Sophie and that your mom was there to save you. Moms are good at that.

Sophie, I'm sorry to hear that you had that happen. Good thing your Mom wasn't too far away.

My Mom always takes off my harness when I'm inside. She is worried it might get caught on something. I don't wear a collar. Yorkies aren't supposed to wear collars. because we have something with our throat. Mom says it's about the trachea, whatever that is. She says ours can sometimes collapse. I thought that meant to fall down but that doesn't make any sense to me.

Most important is that she (my Dad, too) and all our Moms and Dads take extra good care of us.

Wow I am glad you told us about that. I don't sleep in a kennel anymore but when I was a pup my Mom used that to train me to go outside. I am so glad your Mom was there to save you. Thats scarey.

well thats not good cause i always have my chain collar on.  mommy doesnt know what to do now. If i dont go in my crate, I will not only chew whatever i can get my paws on (mommys clothes, shoes, rugs....lol), but i will also get out of the house.  i promise.  I have scratched and chewed my way through wood and screens, and i have even escaped out of a window on the second floor to a patio roof then down on to the ground and off i went!!!!!   (that was super fun!!) but the neighbors told on me cause they saw me on the roof barking and howling. hehehe..  but anyways, i have gotten out of the crate too before when i work hard at it, and if i get out and i dont have my collar and tags on, no one will know who i belong too.  but now mom is afraid to put me in the crate with my collar after reading this!     *sigh*  do you think a fabric collar would be better????

A fabric collar is what I had on when I got hooked on the kennel wires.  It got caught on the loop that you hook the leash to.  I don't think any kind of collar is safe in a wire/metal kennel.  I guess the safest ID is to get a micro chip, but Momma always puts my collar back on as soon as I come out of the kennel.  I never have gotten loose before, but if I did, I would probably run away out of curiosity!  I have a cousin dog that chews his way out of most kennels and gets into everything like you said you do.  I thought that was kind of funny, too, when you got out on the roof!  HeeHee.

Mine said ' Remove Collar for safety" on the bottom black thing. Mom made sure and she slepts on the couch. Now I don't use my cage anymore! I hope you are ok!

I am so glad you were able to save preicous Sophie.  Sadie is usually unattended in her crate (which is metal with the bars) for 5 hours, more, or less.  We DO have to have her collar on because she's one smart cookie and will get out.  We had to rig up her cage because she escaped, LOL! Thank you for warning us, I'll try to think of something.
