Skinny!!

Ok,
Victoira Speaking:
Ok, I'm wondering if there is something I can do to for Kahula skinnyness.
I mean, she is so skinny it looks like we are abusing her.
But trust me where not, we have been seeing witch food would do best for her, also we have been fixing her some home made food, and she has still been skinny.
We don't really know what to do with her.
We don't want people around her thinking we are not leting her eat or anything.

Joey

How  much do you feed her at every meal?

The solution should be simple, feed a lot more LOL.

What food are you feeding her?

There are many reasons that could cause weight loss. The best thing to do is have the vet check her over to see if she has any health problems. I looked online and came up with a couple that could be the cause of weight loss. Which doesn't mean either of these are what your problem is. That is why it is probably better not to take a chance on someone else's theories and I would ask your vet to be sure. Hope everything is all right with her.

She don't have worms, cause she gets her pill monthly!!

Also,

Mom kinda thinks it might be thyroid problems.

Mom feeds me,  Purina One Dog Food.

She is giving me alot also, but I don't really eat it Dx

Hi Tink, I think I remember her saying on Dogster that she'd already had Kahula's blood checked for anything like hyperthyroidism and such.

Make her food more appetizing, Great Danes need a LOT of food to keep weight on- they are major calorie burners!

We do, we always put treats in the food, we put gravy, we put all kinds of stuff in the food, she will just eat around the food and get the good stuff.

Joey
Hmm... maybe a different diet is in order, maybe mix some chicken and rice into her food so she can't pick out the good stuff. Also, some dog bisuits are complete and balanced for all life stages- so if it came to- you could feed her biscuits.

I couldn't find the calories on the Purina One website but you might want to look into a food that has more calories. I also agree with what Joey said about adding chicken in with it. You can also try green beans too

Alrighty,

Mum don't know if I like green beans but she will try.

Shadow
I have had the same quandary with Shadow regarding a healthy weight management diet. Shadow is an athletic 25-pound power packer that requires a high calorie diet to sustain a healthy weight. Forming a diet to compliment his activity level and metabolism was not an easy task. He is food motivated, but at times he turns his nose to his kibble. He is currently thriving on a diet of half raw and half-grain free kibble. I realize this may not be a possibility in your case, however I do recommend locating a good high calorie kibble retailer. I do know most Tractor Supply Company stores stock Taste of the Wild (Calorie Content: 3,750 kcal/kg (375 kcal/cup) Calculated Metabolizable Energy), which is an affordable grain free. If you are not looking into going grain free, then Tractor Supply also stocks Blue Buffalo (kcal/cup = 586 calories), which both would be great options. Most local feed stores stock these brands and plenty reputable others.

As for Iams Naturals and Purina ONE notion, I am not a fan of the companies and the ingredients in the food, so I cannot advocate either of those selections.

You may try a puppy food as well, I have had a few fosters that came from homes where they were inadequately fed, and a high calorie puppy food bulked them back up in no time.

Good luck!

pippy loves the champ

she could still have worms. just because you dont see any in her stool doesnt mean that they arent in the intestines

Pets (like people) who lose weight even while eating an appropriate amount of food is not normal and can be dangerous.

Speak with a veterinarian. Monitor his weight. Weight loss can be caused by many significant health problems. Do not let anyone tell you to "just feed him more" or "It is not a serious problem." - they are wrong and giving you bad advice.

Question: You treated him for heartworm? I assume he was DIAGNOSED with a heartworm infestation and treated with injectable heartworm medication and the veterinary office.

Rocko had the same problem he would eat like a horse but wouldn't gain weight and he would look skinny and like we weren't feeding him...

the vet said there was nothing wrong with him, its just that he was still a pup and was so active that he would really just burn everything off so he would look skinny...

he's still really active but after his 2nd birthday he started to fill out more, and he eats the same amount as before... he still looks lean but not skinny like before... idk how old your dog is but maybe that could be it.

Oh and exercising them until there worn out really opens up there appetite, i've noticed this with Rocko and Zasha, if I go running with them, that same day at meal time they eat a lot and they finish there food quickly... try exercising her and of course wait a couple hours until you feed her, i'm sure she will eat all her food.

Hmm... Well, the person who owns a natural dog food store that I live near said that the dog food Timberwolf would help to gain muscle weight. That might help. Timberwolf comes in a lot of different varieties.

Sushi Never Forgoten

Lizzie meantioned adding green beans. Green beans are very low in calories. Some people add green beans to kibble, but that is so the dog can loose weight, not gain.

Victoira:

The only thing why I keep asking people, is that my mom Angel might get rid of her if we can't get her to gain any weight.

I also, tell my mom it could be that she runs it off.

But, I also might thinks its thyroids.

Cause, the vet never said that she had a intestianal perisite or anything.

Also, we are thinking about getting her this Grandma good..

CRAPPY I forgot what it was called Dx

But it looks really good.

Kahula deary when we first got mattie she was skinnier then you dear now she her natraul weight and height and has healthy as can be.

We got her checked at the vet of course and ran test's for any problems (her old owner abused her badley and had a nasty house)

Well Mattie get's a mixture of kibbles and bits brush bite's and a half a cup full of dog sauce you can get at pets mart or incridipet, and Mattie take's one doggy vitam everyday and has 3 meal's a day But we also trade up the sauce's every few days so she won't get tired of the dog food mixture's..But give her some good hard dog food (good for teeth) and some of that doggy sauce and maybe a tube of doggy vitamen's.

Also feed her some table scrap's every so often but not everyday because it can be harmful to her but don't get her used to getting human food trust me Bit Bit has a bad habit of getting human food so used to it she is super aggressive toward's people who get near her when foods around 0-0 but yeah try that maybe or check food out on pet helping site's or check with your vet =]

I hope this will come in handy or help out a bit =]]

Beneful? Blugh. Definitely not the best you can do IMO.

A dog food should be meat based without harmful grains like corn or wheat. It also shouldn't have chemicals in it like all the dyes Beneful has in it Dx

Myself and my doggy siblings have been doing quite well on Beneful dog food. And Marissa even has been started on Beneful for Puppies. We are all quite healthy and my Pomperanian sisters and Yoshi have the most beautiful fur. We are only given raw vegetables for snack or we have been given only natural dog biscuits. We have regular physicals and our vet has never had anything bad to say about Beneful dog food being unhealthy for us.

Juno

I'm not going to try and convince you to switch, but if you just take a peek at the ingredients of Beneful compared to FreshPet dog food, you might notice a difference in how healthy the food really is:

Beneful:

Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, salt, phosphoric acid, animal digest, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium carbonate, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin A supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, copper sulfate, biotin, garlic oil, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite

FreshPet which is often available at Safeway:

Chicken, eggs, chicken liver, chicken broth, carrots, brown rice, peas, rice bran, carrageenan, salt, natural flavors, Choline chloride, vitamin E supplement, niacin, biotin, riboflavin supplement, manganous oxide, thiamine mononitrate, vitamin B12 supplement, vitamin D3 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid,
Calcium carbonate, zinc proteinate, iron proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, copper proteinate, copper sulfate, niacin, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, thiamine mononitrate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite

The FreshPet sounds a lot healthier than the Beneful huh? It's also all-natural with No preservatives which is why you must refridgerate it. Juno is fed FreshPet natural rolls and she is doing wonderfully! :-D

Shadow

Tinkerbelle, dogs don't have the enzymes to break down raw vegetable matter. Not sure where everyone got the idea Iams was such a great food...

Corn Meal, Chicken By-Product Meal, Chicken, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Ground Whole Grain Barley, Dried Beet Pulp, Dried Egg Product, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Chicken Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Brewers Dried Yeast, Salt, Flax Meal, Calcium Carbonate, Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Beta-Carotene, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Acetate, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of vitamin B1), Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement,Folic Acid), Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Fish Oil (preserved with mixed Tocopherols, a source of Vitamin E), Caramel, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide, Cobalt Carbonate), Choline Chloride, Dried Chicken Cartilage (Natural source of Glucosamine), DL-Methionine, L-Tryptophan, L-Carnitine, Rosemary Extract.

Yuck.

Anyhow by looking at how thin you are in your picture; hips protruding at that visibility is not normal. There could be many factors contributing to her weight, for instance she may be diabetic. I would get her scheduled for a vet appointment as soon as possible. If nothing is found after the visit, put her on a high calorie puppy food, that should bulk her back up in the case there are no outlying factors.
