Scared of loud noises

Any ideas to help a dog become less fearful of loud noises?? I am so skittish during thunderstorms (especially the tornadoes we had last night) and other loud sounds. I'm terrified of clapping, too. I was hoping there is something I can do to become less afraid.

I have just submitted a link to Pikapet with an article describing possible solutions. I suffer the same problem :( I can't just get along with thunders, with fireworks, I get totally mad, I feel anxious, and nothing can make me feel better! But this article explains some things that can be done (check pikapet links)

I don't know if this will help you, but my mommy usually leaves on the tv or the radio. I like to listen to the music

Food...it always helps me calm down...especially something like peanut butter...I can concentrate on it and I don't notice the things that were bothering me as much :)

Food is the best distraction ever. I love peanut butter, too!! Especially when it's frozen inside my kong. Yummy!

Kirby, be sure to read about the peanut butter recall. My mommy had to go get me a new jar of peanut butter just in case mine was a bad batch.

Yes. Food is definitely a good thing to use to distract me. Mommy gave me some peanut butter to eat after my bath so she get could blow dry my hair. I was so distracted with eating I didn't even care about getting dried off.

I don't like when the big ole garbage trucks sneak up behind me when mommy walks us. my mommy thinks it's funny when big bad ole me whimpers like a baby. when I get scared she immediately distracts me from whatever it is that scares me, & next thing I know, I forgot about whatever it was!!

Peanut, how does your mom or dad react with the loud noises? Cesar Milan says that if the owner is calm and holds on to the leash tightly so you don't try to get away it will teach the dog to be calmer during that situation. You might want to give it a try.

I love Cesar Milan....mommy is calm, but she does chuckle at me (she thinks I don't know) Daddy likes to bring us to the big park where we can run off the leash. There I'm so preoccupied with running that I don't notice anything else. I will let my mommy know your tip...thanks:) Doggie advice is always welcome

Yes, I really like all the useful tips from Cesar Milan. He really does know his stuff. Darci was once 'attacked' by an overly friendly German Shepherd at the park. He didn't mean harm, but because of his size it scared, and hurt, Darci. After that, Darci was afraid of big dogs, but I tried being calm - as Cesar suggests - and she has really changed so much. It worked wonders. I hope it can help you, too, Peanut!

we try using his tips for Misty cause she is an aggressive dog at times (who knows what happened to her before mommy adopted her). Mommy walks the both of us at the same time & we are a lot to handle sometimes (Misty is 105lbs & I'm 65lbs!! We definitely outweigh mommy by a lot...she won't let me tell you by how much though :D )

My mommy always says, You can't have a treat until you listen to me. I always listen when she says this, because i LOVE treats. I listen anyways, but when it comes to Baths, i get horrible.

I'm scared too.  I hate to sound of the garbage truck, but moreso of fireworks.  During New Years and 4th of July, the humans play fireworks where I live.  I just shake and shake becuase I'm so scared.  Then, mommy has to come and turn the radio loud and hug me, so I can try to be brave.
