That's so sad. I know that if there is a low cost spay and neutering facility maybe there is a low cost vet clinic that will be cheep for heart worm medicine. If that can't help, there is another way, but my be difficult for his owner. If his owner gave him up to a shelter or someone that would take him and treat him. Maybe search for google if there is anything else. |

Maybe I am wrong about this, but the way I understood about Heartworms was this: That AFTER a pet had heartworms that there was nothing that could cure it. That is why they do bloodwork on the pet before starting him on the Heartworm medication (a preventative). I thought that if the dog tested positive that there was nothing that could be done to save the pet and he would die eventually....sooner than later. Now I am not an authority on this topic, but I am sure that there are those who know more about this than I do and could have more input on this topic. I hate really bad that Bear will be/or already has been put down. I don't think we should criticize the owner for making this decision, as all family situations are different and maybe this was the only choice that they felt they had. I feel more of a need to sympathize with their heartache over the agonizing decision. It is a hard one to make and a painful one for the family, as well. I am sure that they feel bad enough already without the added stress of critism, and I am certain that no harm was meant to Bear's owners over this.
Love to all,
Keesie |

Heartworms are almost always curable, but can be fatal at times. |

I agree Lady Keesie, I was also told this. So was my daughter when she got jay Jay and Kooter. They had to have bloodwork done before they could take the medicine because it wasn't a cure it was a preventive. |

This can be prevented by giving your dog preventative medicines
(usually a chewable cookie-like tablet that most doags find very tasty -
vailable from your vet)and
you have the assurance that your dog is unlikely to get heart-worm. and also i am not trying to make bear owner feel bad not at all but this little chewable cookie like tablet not cost alot maybe like 10 dollars at a local store ( but at vet office of course it will cost more

I am glad to hear that.....about the possibility of Heartworms being curable. I have never had to worry about that problem with any of my pets, so far....and hopefully never will, God willing. |

Pippy, I am really sorry....I didn't mean for you to think that you were making Bears owner feel bad on purpose. I know you are a very kind and tender-hearted pet and owner and only have the best interest of others in your heart. I guess I came across too strong. I did not mean to make anyone feel bad about anything. I just feel bad for Bear and his family right now. That's all. You are a sweetie, Pippy, and we all love that quality about you. |

if there was a way to donate, then I am sure we could help.
The only thing we can do is pray he will make it through and the owners figure out what to do.... |

Honestly, hearing things like this makes me mad. (Not at you Samee) It's just plain irresponsible. |

That is why it is SO IMPORTANT that our pets have regular Vet visits (as much as they hate that) and for them to get the necessary testing done BEFORE there is a problem like this. Then it could have been prevented with medication. Unfortunately, it appears that Bear did not have the routine testing done from the beginning. It is sad, and like you said, irresponsible. Hopefully, this will be a lesson that will keep something like this from ever happening to one of their pets in the future....a rude awakening. Also others here on the site may take heed and start having more thorough pet care done at the Vets for their pets. Sometimes it takes hearing about something tragic about one pet, to save hundreds of other pets. I feel really bad about it all, too. I have a feeling that Bear's owner feels really bad about it, as well. |

Don't be mad at Bear's mommy though, he had LOTS of them and they needed LOTS of medicine for him which they couldn't afford. :'( I am going to miss him so much though. Hopefully there is a way that he can keep his life! ='[ |

I very much doubt that Bear's mommy on Pikapet is old enough to be considered the adult responsible for Bear. Heartworms are completely preventable. It is irresponsible to take an animal into your home that you cannot afford to care for properly. As much as it would pain me, I would give up all of my pets to good homes if I could no longer afford to take care of them. I just can't stand to see an animal needlessly suffer or die. I know others that have set something up with their vet so that people could call the vet and donate money towards operations, etc. I hope that Bear's family can figure out a different way. |

"As much as it would pain me, I would give up all of my pets to good homes if I could no longer afford to take care of them." I have no idea what I would do if I could not afford proper pet care. That is why mom didn't know if she wanted to have 5 dogs plus 3 cats to take to the vet! Mom was actually thinking of when she cured the mange she was going to give him to someone, but it was actually to late. |

Yes Ebony....it would literaly kill me to have to give up my pets to other homes, but I would do it, too, If I was unable to give them proper care and/or attention. I'd rather see them somewhere else than to see them suffer needlessly. I also hope that Bear's family can come up with a better solution. I don't know. It is sad. |

Lady Keesie, I had heartworm a few years ago. They gave me two treatments, for the first one I had to stay avernight, after the second one the next day, I could go home. Mom was so really really scared that she stayed home that first whole day and prayed and sent me good thoughts. There is a cure, but is was almost $300.00! |

Sometimes there is nothing you can do, it depends on how infrested he is, if it is really really bad, then maybe the vet recomended that he get put down, you never know, or maybe the vet wasnt a good one, I personally would have got a second opinion before putting him down. We are all praying for you Bear! |

Yeah, the vet recommened it. D: Why would they do that to Bear? That vet is EVIL! I hope that isn't the vet I am going to because me and Bear live in the same state! |

Samee, I realize you're upset, but vets are not evil - they do what is best for the pet. If the pet is in pain and there is no cure for them the humane thing to do is to have them put down. It's a very difficult decision for a vet and the pet owner to make, but sometimes things are left to long there's really no other option. Vets don't like putting pets down - I know when Mom has to she's depressed for days. Mom also suggests to the pet owner to seek a second opinion prior to making the decision if they don't feel they are doing the proper things. If Bear lived close to us I know my Mom would treat him without charging his owners anything. She would much rather see the pet get the help necessary then to put down a pet because of lack of funds for treatment. I do agree that there are some vet that are more interested in making money then they are in saving the pets life, but they really are very rare. Most people become vets because they love animals and want to help them not harm them. But, there are times that there isn't a choice. Seeing a pet suffer is usuallly as hard on the vet as it is on the pets owner. Purrs, Cuddles, and Kisses, Princess Cilantro |

it depends on how badly infested he is.........i think sometimes it is better to put a pet down than make them live in pain.this is like a decision my family had to make with one of our dogs,it was hard but i know we made the right one,he had a good life and it didnt end in suffering, his end was painless.im really sorry about bear. |

I agree Rua, last December, I got into ALOT of chocolate and was very very sick and the vet told my mommy that if I get any worse, call them and they will put me down. And then I started to have covoltions ( sp?) so she called the vet, then mommy decided to see if I make it though the night and I did! So I dont know, I guess it just depends. The only reason why mommy was going to put me down was cuz I was suffering alot :( |
