animal cruelity?

I just wanted to know what everyone thought of ear cropping, tail docking, ear piercing, tattoo's, etc... do you think this is cruel to our dogs? Some places are trying to ban these practices...

I would personally never do it. My pit is completely unaltered and she's gorgeous. These things are all painful which I think is unfair, they don't get a say in the matter. It's a good question though, everyone will have a different opinion.

yeah, the ears are there for a reason, to help them hear, and to keep the inside of there ears clean form everything. it looks like it hurts to have ears that short. it's like if you see someones arm bent at am impossable angle, even if it doesn't bother the person, it hurts to look at somtimes

I figure (insert your deity here) created them that way there must be a purpose for it beyond the cosmetic.  There usually is, you know.  I could never bring myself to alter a pet unless absolutely necessary, but that's me.

I have a chip and it never has bothered me...it's like a piece of rice under the skin....and I'll never get lost or put to sleep at the pound cause of it...I think it's a great thing.

I agree with you, Kirby, the micro-chip isn't quite the same catagory as clipping tails and ears.  The Chip really is a life saver for some pets.  It is a very quick and simple process to have it done, too.  The clipping and other things, I don't like any of that.  Like the other Pets said, natural is the way the Pets were made and if it is good enough to be made that way, then that is how the Pets should remain!

i have seen dogs with their ears pierced and i think it's really cute. it seems no different than piercing a babys ear. A baby doesn't have a say in the matter either... I think Lucy would look cute with her ears pierced. I will NOT do it only because she is full of energy and i am afraid she would rip them out...

Although I know some people do, I would not pierce a baby's ears either.

personally I wouldn't pierce my babys ears but hey, I wasn't allowed to have mine done until I was 16...guess thats probably why...

i dont think i have seen a dog w/ ears peirced, and i am a boy, i wouldn't do that. it might be cute, but doggies dont care about earings, so i dont think mommy would ever let one of us be hurt just so she could put earings on us

Who in their right mind would pierce a dog's ears???  It might LOOK cute but that's just a bit silly.  I certainly would not want my ears pierced anymore than my belly pierced...just silly.

That is essentially what they do when they tag some wild animals for study, but for fashion ... I just worry about it getting caught on something and ripping out.

Hey Rocky, you brought up a good point there about the collar getting caught on things.  I wrote a forum about that a long time back but I just want to remind all the pet owners that I almost choked to death once because my Momma left my collar on me while I was in my wire kennel.  Somehow, and we don't know exactly what it was that I did, but I got the metal ring (tag holder) caught on the gate and the more I pulled, the tighter it got.  Momma heard my whining and crying and choking and got to me in time to save me.  So be very careful, and remove collars if at all possible before putting your pets in their wire kennels.  Sorry for taking up so much of your space, but this is an important point that I felt i needed to make.

You can get "jewelry" for you cell phone and "jewelry" for you pet.  Humans are weird that way.  They like to put stuff on other things, and that includes Dog and Cat Beans.  I don't think it right, but you know...

I have cat jewelry I wear on my collar.  I rather not wear collar, but she says I have to if I want to go outside so that someone will not think I stray can and try to take me.  It small thing, it make her happy.

I do not know about this other stuff, but declawing a cat is mean.  It is like if humans amuputated their own fingers. As they don't do that, they should not declaw cat either.

i dont think declawing is bad for indoor single cats, b/c unless the nails r constinly used, they hurt nad thats y cats scatch, but a cat that goes outside shouldnever be declawde.

My brothers and I are declawed...it was a necessary evil for my mommy to keep us. When mommy was young and out on her own for the first time, she lived in a really bad neighborhood because it was all she could afford. When her lease was up, she had an opportunity to share a townhouse with her brother and split the rent, but he said she couldn't move in unless I was declawed. I was just over a year old, and I was sore for a few days but I bounced back. Once my brothers came along, Mommy lived with Daddy, who thought since I was declawed they should be too. If we went outside, Mommy NEVER would have done it!!!

Also, mommy doesn't think surgeries should be done simply for cosmetic reasons (like ear crop or tail dock).

Seems silly, like plastic surgery for doggies!

If your mommy had to cut off part of her own fingers to move into a house, would she do it?

My auntie had a cat when she was a young girl. He was supposed to be indoor cat, so aunties Mom & Dad decided Tiger should be declawed. Ends up Tiger refused to be indoor kitty and spent great amounts of time outside...chasing dogs, climbing trees, beating up stranger cats, killing critters of all ilk. He had very strong front legs and he lived to be 18 1/2 years old. He didn't seem to suffer from it.

I'm not declawed and refuse to have anyone touch my feet with clippers or those weird rubber things you can put on claws...and the furniture, carpet and skin show that I am not declawed. And I'm constantly getting claws tangled up in stuff and freak out when auntie or mum try to help me.

Actually, yes, she would have made that sacrifice on herself to get out of the situation she was in. She had been broken into twice-once someone followed her home and forced his way in behind her and attacked her...she was able to struggle and get to the phone and call 911 and escaped with her life and only minor injuries. Next time she wasn't home, but when she came home the window was broken and her TV and some jewelry were stolen. Of course with the broken window her biggest fear was that I would be gone..but once I heard her calling I emerged from my hiding spot in the kitchen cabinet.

So before you pass judgement, understand that she would have cut off her own fingers if she had to at that point. She was 21 and scared and given an opportunity to live in a place where we would be safe.

FYI-we don't bite either, we stay indoors and are not threatened in any manner that we feel the need to bite.

I'm sorry if I seem defensive, but my mommy loves us so much and didn't declaw us for cosmetic reasons or to keep her furniture nice. Given the choice, I would do it all over again to live in a home where I'm loved so much.

it depends on the options open to her...if it was to get off of death row I'm sure she would...

Hey JoJo, your mommy made the right decision for you and for her.  We can't judge others when we don't understand the whole story.  I'm glad she was able to keep you, and I am sure that the sacrifice was worth being able to remain alive and well with your mommy!  Glad everything turned out all right for you both now.

Angel..cats do not scratch becaue their claws hurt them...thats just....'silly' to say. "Scratching is a territorial instinct by which cats place their mark and establish their turf. Through scratching, cats mark their domains with more than just visible signs of claw marks. Cat's paws also have scent glands that leave their own special scent on their territory." (http://www.catscratching.com/#why) Please don't say "facts" when you don't know for sure.

My Mommy and her daddys wife got in a "discussion" about declawing....mommy would never think of declawing George but her daddys wife had all three of her cats declawed.  I guess being declawed is better than the pound or the streets....so...to each his/her own.

No one has to explain their self here. A cat can either be declawed and live in a loving home, being taken care of or they can keep their claws and live in a shelter or on the street. Those two lead to deaths. An indoor cat doesn't need claws, it needs a good momma, a good family.

I had a declawed cat once, many years ago, one of the first pets I owned when I got out of high school.  She was kept safely inside and was treated well and loved.  But she would bite to defend herself if something scared her.  And often, since she was seeking me for safety, I was the thing that got bit.

I am told that many cats that have been declawed, do turn to biting.

I would never declaw a cat.   When they declaw a cat, they take the bone up to the first joint.  Look at your finger and think about that for a while.

Furniture is replacable and there are so many alternatives now, that I see no reason for what I consider a barbaric practice.

If you think ear cliping and tail tucking is cruel, isn't declawing?  Not just are you physically maiming your cat, but you stand the rist of psychologically maiming him or her as well.

i have never declawed a cat, or had one, but i dont think it is crul. humans have there tonsles out, and kidneys. b/c of evalution, cat have evolved into House cats, and they dont need clws, if a cat has any chance of being an outdoor cat, he/she should def. have their claws ne question about it. that y i would never de claw, b/c how do u know one day kitty wont wake up and deside outside isn't such a bad place after all. (Gizmo said this one day).. but hey, i donno, thats just me

I bite and I have all my needle sharp claws and when I wrestle  I try to bite the blanket monster that chases my butt. My aunties Tiger used to use his back claws to try and disembowel your arm when you were wrestling with him just like I do. She says she doesn't notice a difference between wrestling with me and wrestling with Tiger...except I can do more damage. lol

Bigworm, they MIGHT not "need" them in a house, but that doesn't mean it still won't hurt like hell to get them yanked out. You don't NEED your finger nails, either.

that seem a little extream to say they will be "yanked out"...first they put you to sleep for a little while when they do it and it's now done by lazer and is virtually painless...In fact you need to keep a close eye on the kitty because it could open the wound by jumping around...it's so painless they forget about the stiches...aside from that it's more like having your finger cut off at the first knuckle.
